HISTORY:
The seeds for a Gay and Lesbian Alano Club in St.
Louis were first sewn in the fall of 1986. After three years of planning
and fund-raising, the Steps Alano Club proudly opened its doors at 1935A
Park Ave. on December 20, 1989. For more than 17 years, as landlord, the
Steps Alano Club provided a safe space for GLBTA recovery at that
location.
Facing substantial costs to replace the heating, air
conditioning and electrical in an already deteriorating building, the
Steps Alano Club Board of Directors and the membership-at-large,
concluded the interests of the CLUB would best be served by moving to a
new location.
Less than 3 months later, the Steps Alano Club
opened its doors at 3974 Humphrey St. on January 20, 2007. Currently
there are more than 25 meetings held at the Club each week. The Steps
Alano Club is home to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous
(NA), Al-Anon Family Group, Codependents Anonymous (CODA), Sexual
Compulsives Anonymous (SCA) and Incest Survivors Anonymous (ISA). One of
the oldest Gay Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the nation, dating from
1974, holds meetings at the Steps Alano Club.
NEXT STEPS:
Since the beginning, the Steps Alano Club has
offered safe haven for GLBTA recovery by providing space for 12-step
meetings in a range of different programs. We have, however, never had
sufficient space to offer recreational facilities where Club members can "hang
out" and socialize in a fun, safe and sober environment. Through
expansion of our present facility, we hope to offer a new dimension in
Alano Club services.
